The Everest 3 Passes Trek is definitely for ones who like a challenge and the trek surely delivers one of the greatest trekking challenges in the Everest region. The 3 passes of Everest: Renjo La (5,340 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Kongma La (5,535 m), are world-renowned for their difficulty and beauty they offer. The trek offers you a chance to experience the culture and lifestyle of the Sherpa community. Moreover, the trip is a surreal adventure through the Sagarmatha National Park.
You start the 19-day Everest 3 Passes Trek by arriving at Kathmandu. After preparing for the trip in Kathmandu, you catch a flight to Lukla where the trek starts. From Lukla, you head to Phakding and then enter the trails through the Sagarmatha National Park to reach Namche. From here, you pass by villages inhabited by Sherpa people like Thame and Lumde. The scenic view of the Mt. Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and the neighboring peaks are worth the effort you have put in. En route to the base camp, you explore Gokyo Region after crossing the first pass, Renjo La (5360m). Gokyo is famous for the views of the magnificent Ngozumpa Glacier and the Gokyo lakes. From Gokyo, you trek to Dragnag and cross the second pass, Cho La (5420m) that boasts stunning views of Nirekha Peak (6,169m), Lhotse (8516m), and Cho Oyu (8201m). The trail continues to Lobuche from where you can visit Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar. Kalapatthar has an amazing view of Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Ama Dablam (6,856m) and much other snows capped mountains. From Lobuche, you begin your return back trek tackling the final pass, Kongma La Pass (5535m), and arriving at Chhukung. Next, you head back to Lukla via Tengboche and Namche Bazaar. The best time to trek this route is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons, as the weather is more favorable during these times.

Today, you can buy or rent the required items for the trek that you don’t have. After the trip preparation, you can go explore Kathmandu city. You can visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Temple, and Pashupatinath Temple. These places showcase the culture, tradition, and architecture of medieval Nepali society. Also, these destinations are enlisted as world heritage sites by UNESCO.
You catch an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Upon reaching Lukla, you are introduced to the local Sherpa guides and porters that will be with you for the whole trip. Then, you head to the first destination, Phakding, a small Sherpa village. The trail to Phakding is a gradual descent along the Dudh Koshi River.
The trail today leads to Namche Bazaar, which is the busiest town of the Khumbu region. The trail goes along the Dudh Koshi River, with a gradual ascent that gets steep towards the end. After crossing many suspension bridges walking through dense rhododendron and magnolia forest, you enter Sagarmatha National Park. Along the way to Namche, you might be able to spot some wild animals in the national park.
Since you are going to higher altitudes, you must adapt to the climate and altitude. There are many shops, restaurants, and cafes at Namche so, you can visit and explore them. You can also visit the Sherpa Culture Museum to get more information about the Sherpa lifestyle, Khumbu region, and mountaineering history in the region. There is also the option to hike to the neighboring villages.
You take a different route than the usual route of base camp and head towards the first pass which is northwest near Tibet. Along the way, you see many yaks and Tibetans who come to Namche to shop and trade. Thame is also the birthplace of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and offers breathtaking views of Thamserku (6608m), Kusum Khangkaru (6367m), and neighboring mountains.
Leaving Thame, you continue walking uphill to Lumde. The environment along the trail is pristine and there are some old Sherpa villages on the way. You also come across yaks, mules, and yak herders on the way. The trekking terrain is a bit difficult but the views of the Khumuche Himal ranges make it worth the toil.
Today’s destination is Gokyo which you reach by crossing the first pass of the trek, the Renjo La Pass (5360m). The trail is steep and the thinning air might make it difficult for you. Once you reach the top of the pass, you get a stunning view of the Mt. Everest (8,848m), Cho Oyu (8,201m), Makalu (8,475m), Nuptse (7,861m), and Ama Dablam (6,856m). Then, you descend to Gokyo where you stay overnight.
Early morning, you prepare to go to the scenic Gokyo Ri and Ngozumpa Glacier. From the peak, you can see an amazing view of the Mt. Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m) and the sublime Gokyo Lakes. You can explore the peak and the glacier for a few hours. Then, you descend back to Gokyo and prepare to head towards Dragnag. The trail is relatively easy as you descend to Dragnag.
You start the trek early morning and head towards the second pass, Cho La (5420m). The trail follows along a river and gradually climbs to a ridge. Once you reach the top of the pass after a steep climb through rocky tough terrain, you see an amazing view of Nirekha Peak (6,169m) and the Mt. Everest (8848m). After enjoying the view for some time, you descend to Dzongla. The trail relatively gets easier after crossing the pass.
After breakfast, you head to the next destination, Lobuche. Today is an easy short trek. The uphill and downhill trail offers you an incredible view of Ama Dablam (6,856m), Thamserku (6,608m), and Kangtega (6,685m). The trail passes through lush pasturelands and the Chola Tsho Lake to ascend to Lobuche. The final part of the trek stretches along the Khumbu Glacier.
You start early to head off to Gorakshep. The trail is easy and short. After resting for some time at Gorakshep, you trek to Everest Base Camp. The trail consists of rocky moraine and you can see Khumbu Glacier and Icefall along the way. Mountains like Pumo Ri (7165m) and Lingtren (6749m) decorate the views from the base camp. After exploring the base camp and admiring the view of surrounding glaciers, you descend to Gorakshep before nightfall.
After an early breakfast, you head to Kalapatthar that is famous for its panoramic view of the mountain range. From this vantage point, you get an amazing view of Everest (8,848m), Nuptse (7,861m), Lhotse (8,516m), and the rest of the Everest Range. After taking pictures and exploring the area, you head back to Gorakshep. From Gorakshep, you continue on a steep trail along the Khumbu Glacier to reach Lobuche.
Today, you cross the third and highest pass of the whole trip- the Kongma La Pass (5535m). Trekkers do not often travel this pass as the trail is very steep. Once you reach the top of the pass, you get an impressive view of Makalu (8475m) and Ama Dablam (6856m). From the pass, you descend a relatively easier trail to Chhukung where you arrive crossing some glaciers and pasturelands.
After breakfast, you take the trail that leads to Pangboche. En route, you see beautiful sceneries of mountains and prayer flags. The trail goes downhill and it is relatively easier to trek. Pangboche is one of the large settlements of Sherpa in the Khumbu region. You will enjoy the warm hospitality of Pangboche village once reach there.
Leaving Pangboche, you head for Namche Bazaar. As you have gotten used to the trail, this route will feel relatively easier. You cross through Tengboche on the way and here, you can visit the biggest monastery of Everest Region, Tengboche Monastery. Once you reach Namche Bazaar, you can relax and enjoy the busy trading town.
The trail you take today leads you back to Lukla. You cross Dudh Koshi River via suspension bridges and walk through the dense and lush forest of oak, birch, and rhododendron. En route, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the mountain terrains one last time before you head back to Kathmandu. The trail up till Phakding goes downhill before gradually ascending to Lukla.
From Lukla, you catch an early flight to Kathmandu. The flight offers the surreal company of the Everest Himalayas to Kathmandu. Upon reaching the hotel and refreshing, you join the farewell dinner with our guides and staff who helped you on this trip. You can explore the city and do some souvenir shopping for the rest of the day.
Today is your last in Kathmandu. Please make sure you have all your stuff and valuables with you. Before you depart, we would like to hear your feedback about the trip.
